Introduction
ChargerLAB reports that on April 28, 2026, the EU’s Regulation (EU) 2025/2052 officially extended Ecodesign requirements to laptops, mandating that all new laptops sold in the EU must feature USB-C charging ports starting today.
EU regulations prioritize a low-carbon, universal, and convenient philosophy. From the 2027 battery waste rules to the current standards governing adapter efficiency, port compatibility, and compliance certification, these measures establish a solid foundation for standardized control across the entire supply chain.
EU Mandate for Unified Charging Interface Now Extends to All Laptops
Per official EU notices, the initiative to unify charging ports was first introduced in 2014, leading to the formal approval of the Common Charger Directive (EU) 2022/2380 by the European Parliament and the Council in November 2022.
Following the phase-one rollout on December 28, 2024, which covered 12 small device types like phones and tablets, the inclusion of laptops on April 28, 2026, officially closes the loop on the EU's charging port standardization legislation. This mandate now enforces USB-C as the compulsory charging standard.
Under the revised Radio Equipment Directive (RED), all new laptops must now feature a standard USB-C port compliant with EN/IEC 62680-1-3:2021. This requirement covers 13 categories of portable electronics, ensuring seamless charging compatibility and interoperability for users.
It is worth noting that the new rules allow workstations and devices over PD 240W to keep proprietary ports like MagSafe or DC inputs. Nevertheless, USB-C is mandated as a required backup for universal charging. Manufacturers are strictly forbidden from eliminating USB-C to keep only private interfaces, a move designed to guarantee basic charging compatibility for all users.
The new mandate sets hard requirements for fast-charging protocols and power delivery. Laptops, gaming rigs, and workstations rated above 15W must be fully compatible with the USB PD protocol, meaning brands can no longer restrict third-party charger speeds through software or hardware locks.
The EU is also pushing for the USB PD 3.1 standard to enable up to 240W fast charging for the latest AMD and Intel-based laptops. Since devices with Thunderbolt 4/5 or USB4 are natively compatible with USB PD, they already meet the compliance standards without needing further hardware changes.
In terms of sales and labeling, the mandate requires that charging wattage and USB PD compatibility be clearly marked on the laptop, its box, and instructions. Brands must also provide a standalone option to buy the laptop without a charger, push users to reuse their old USB-C bricks and cut down on waste from the start.
Expanding the USB-C mandate to laptops is more than just a port swap; it’s a strategic move affecting user experience, green governance, and the global tech industry. The EU predicts this will save shoppers roughly €250 million a year on unneeded chargers, directly reducing the cost of owning electronics.
According to ChargerLAB, industry giants like Apple, Dell, ASUS, Lenovo, HP, and Microsoft have already pivoted. Their product lines have moved toward making full-featured USB-C and Thunderbolt ports the default standard for all new models.
